Going to the Racetrack
From 1990 to 1994 I traveled through Mississippi, North Carolina and Virgina seeking out old time musicians in order to learn their music first hand. Etta Baker was one of the most delightful ladies I ever had the blessing of making friends with. I videotaped her playing numerous songs in her living room and thought that this one would make a wonderful lesson. 'Going to the Racetrack is a shining example of the Piedmont style. There's a turnaround in here that is unlike anything I ever heard or played!
I've also composed a variation of her playing and added that to this lesson as well. You'll not only learn the way she played it but I'll show you how to be creative with the song using chord inversions, forward and backward banjo rolls and a ragtime chord progression.
I transcribed the song using a home video I shot of Etta.
